Alfred Savage
Announcing the peaceful passing of “ALFRED THE GREAT†at the Lion’s Head Hospital on Wednesday, October 21, 2015. He was celebrating his 97th year of life. He touched everyone he met. He enjoyed his role as a father to Beverley, father in-law to Stephen and grandfather to Lindsay and Tyler. He was a brother to Evelyn and Fred. Predeceased by his twin brother Andy and brothers Harold, Bill and Robert. He was a great, great, great uncle and dear friend to many. Alf was a gentle, humble, generous and a wise man. His skill and experience in holding the attention of a crowd was complemented by his uncanny humour, wealth of life stories and life lessons that he shared with many. Growing up in Oakville on a market garden farm in the early 1920’s was a very demanding job….with many stories to be told about that time of his life…He later served his country in World War II through the Royal Canadian Air Force primarily stationed in North Africa and later in England. After the war he provided much dedication and assistance to his home town of Oakville and neighbors in the Village of Swansea (a small community west of Toronto before amalgamation). He would have been considered a cornerstone of the community. He was a carpenter and helped with the building and development of the Swansea Public School, Betty Crocker factory, Toronto Brewery District shoreline grain silos and Christie Biscuits factory. He worked for many years at Shell Canada as a burner service technician and a bulk oil sales man. Alf was a great volunteer and helper, he achieved many things with his long life. The most notable contribution he provided was volunteering as the grounds and caretaker at the Windermere United Church in Toronto for over 40 years. Later in his life he made the move to live with daughter Beverley and family at Miller Lake. With his love for the game of cards, he fit right in with the seniors at the Lion’s Head Friendship Club where many of his life experiences were shared. Some would consider him as a role model and he set a great example on how to live life and respectively interact with others, his presence will be missed by many. Following cremation a private graveside service will be held in Stayner where Alf will be interred with his late wife Cora. We ask anyone who wishes to provide a donation in memory of Alf’s life, are directed to the following organizations: Bruce Peninsula Hospice or Lion’s Head Hospital Auxiliary. Arrangements entrusted to Grey Bruce Cremation and Burial Services 519-371-8507. Online condolences may be made at www.greybrucecremation.com.
