Margaret Ballantyne

1948 – 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Margaret Ballantyne, who died peacefully in her sleep on July 14, 2025, in her 77th year.

Margaret was a mentor, a teacher, an artist, a mother, a partner, a sister—nothing less than a force of nature. Born in Brantford in 1948, she began disrupting the norm at a young age, always with a gleeful glint in her eye. Though her childhood took her across the United States, her heart always belonged to Port Dover. No matter where life led her, that quiet fishing town remained her anchor.

Her lifelong passion for textiles became the thread that wove through everything she did. She earned her Master’s degree in Textiles from Moore College of Art and Temple University in 1972. Margaret went on to teach at Sheridan College and the Ontario College of Art, sharing her creative vision with generations of students. Her teaching extended beyond the classroom into her work at the Textile Museum of Canada, where she served as a conservator for more than 20 years. There, she cared for the collection with deep reverence and helped guide countless young professionals in finding their path.

In retirement, Margaret built a rich life in Owen Sound with her longtime partner, the late Stephen Hogbin. Their home was filled with love, art, community, and conversation—one that reflected the creative and generous spirit they shared.

Even while supporting others, Margaret always made space for her own artistic voice. Whether through weaving or painting, her work was bold, vibrant, and unmistakably hers. She brought color and life to everything she touched, and that energy lives on in the people she inspired.

Margaret is survived by her daughter Walker (husband Liam), her stepdaughter Molly, and her brother Bob (wife Barb). She will be remembered with deep love by her extended family, close friends, colleagues, and the many students and artists whose lives she shaped.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s memory to the Textile Museum of Canada, an institution she loved and supported with all her heart.

Arrangements entrusted to Grey Bruce Cremation and Burial Services, greybrucecremation.com.
