Dr. Bruce Chung
Dr. Bruce Tang Wing Chung of Durham, Ontario passed peacefully with family by his side on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
Bruce was born in Fujian, China on May 16, 1939. Through hard work and determination, he rose from humble beginnings as an orphan to become a doctor. He completed his medical degree at the National Defense Medical College in Taiwan and interned in anesthesiology in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He practiced in Newfoundland from 1971 to 1982 and then in Durham, serving the communities of Grey and Bruce Counties until 2015.
Possessing a curious mind, Bruce loved science, music (he was a violinist), the water (he was certified as a sailing captain), animals (especially cats and pandas), his family and food.
He is survived by Sing, his loving wife of 54 years, and her family in Taiwan. He lives on through his older daughter, Carrie Lee, her husband, Xavier Furtado (whom he loved very much), and his younger daughter, Catherine.
His family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care he received from Dr. Hernan Boniolo (his family doctor and former colleague), and the staff at the Hanover & District Hospital, in particular Drs. Arooba Talat, Randy Montag, and Diana Boughan. Special thanks to his palliative care doctor, Dr. Susan Batten; Nurses Sarah and Susan from CarePartners; Occupational Therapist Nicole Haveman from Paramed; as well as Betty Boice and the team from Ontario Health at Home. Heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Chapman House (Grey Bruce Hospice) for making his final days comfortable.
At Bruce’s request, no funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Chapman House (Grey Bruce Hospice), Durham Hospital Foundation, Hanover & District Hospital Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
